Anxiety disorders are the most common group of mental health conditions in Australia affecting 14% of people aged 16-85 (ABS: National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing).
At Clearview Pathway, we understand that sometimes anxiety can be so overwhelming that it can be hard to cope with everyday life. We will undertake a thorough assessment confidentially and empathetically, ensuring that you feel safe to express your emotions. We will work with you to overcome the thoughts that trigger anxiety so that you can regain control of your life.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety (also known as the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response) is the body’s automatic response to stress, or it can be triggered by specific situations or events. You may experience an increased heart rate, faster breathing and a surge of stress hormones. Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. However, anxiety that continues once the stressful situation has passed can seriously interfere with your ability to function in day-to-day life.
Signs of anxiety
Some common symptoms of anxiety include physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms such as:
Treatments for anxiety
Treatment will depend on the type and severity of the anxiety. Lifestyle changes, such as regular physical exercise, nutrition and healthy sleep patterns may help mild anxiety. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (designed to change problematic thinking patterns causing anxiety), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (a form of mindfulness-based therapy requiring you to accept the difficulties that come with life and commit to making changes to overcome them) and Narrative Therapy (separating yourself from the problem) are all possible treatments.
If we feel that medication or ‘desensitisation’ (slowly and safely exposing you to your feared situations to reduce the associated anxiety) may be necessary in addition to other treatments, we may suggest referring you to your doctor (if you have not already visited them) or to a psychologist.
When anxiety impacts your everyday life, talking to a counsellor is the first step towards regaining control. If you, or anyone you know is experiencing any of the symptoms above, book an appointment with us at Clearview Pathway.
