Life Transitions

Throughout our lifetime, we will experience a number of life transitions, such as starting school or university, getting a job, reaching a significant age, retirement or losing someone close to us. Most transitions are generally positive. However, adjusting to change, even positive change, can be difficult, especially when those changes are thrust upon us when we are not expecting them and we are forced to adjust before we fully understand the situation.

What are stressful life transitions?

Some common stressful life transitions include: ·

  • Death of someone close to you
  • Loss of a relationship (including separation or divorce) or friendship
  • Remarriage
  • Pregnancy/challenges of being a parent
  • Buying/selling a home
  • Diagnosis of a chronic or terminal condition
  • ‘Empty nest’ syndrome
  • Difficulty adjusting to a new city
  • Concerns about ageing

This list is not exhaustive and any life change can induce stress. This stress can negatively affect a person’s physical and mental health, resulting in a number of symptoms, including headaches, disturbed sleep, trouble eating well, using drugs and/or alcohol to cope, as well as anxiety and depression.

What happens in counselling?
